§ 6. Centripetal Acceleration & Turning Dynamics (Grade 9–10)
Centripetal acceleration a = ω²R and radial skidding threshold. Any curvilinear motion is accelerated: the velocity vector continuously changes direction due to a centripetal force directed toward the center of curvature.
Theory Summary & Scientific Mechanism
Every curvilinear motion is accelerated: even when speed v = const is uniform, the tangent velocity vector v continuously changes direction. The rate of rotation of v defines the centripetal (normal) acceleration aₙ, directed radially inward toward the center of curvature.
From the geometric similarity of the position triangle Δr and velocity-change triangle Δv as Δ t → 0, one derives aₙ = (v²)/(R) = ω² R. By Newton’s second law, this acceleration requires a net inward radial force Fₙ = (mv²)/(R). On a flat horizontal turn, static tire friction provides this centripetal force: F_fr ≤ μ mg.
The no-skid stability condition (mv²)/(R) ≤ μ mg sets the critical cornering speed vₘax = √(μ g R). Exceeding vₘax means static friction can no longer bend the trajectory along radius R, causing the vehicle to skid outward toward the tangent.
Everyday Analogy
When a car takes a sharp turn or you whirl a stone on a string, you feel pulled outward. In reality, the stone simply wants to fly straight by inertia, while the string pulls it inward toward the center!
Interactive Question & Derivation
A block rests on a horizontal rotating turntable at radius R from the axis. How does the centripetal acceleration a_c = ω² R change if the disk's angular velocity ω is doubled?
- A: Centripetal acceleration and required static friction increase by a factor of 4
- B: Centripetal acceleration remains unchanged because radius R is constant
- C: Centripetal acceleration decreases by half
Study Hint: In which direction does the net force (string tension) point during uniform circular motion, and how does Fₙ = mω² R scale with angular speed ω?
Proof & Explanation: Since a_c = ω² R = v² / R, doubling the angular velocity ω increases the centripetal acceleration fourfold (4×). Once the required centripetal force mω² R exceeds the maximum static friction force μ mg, the body breaks traction and skids radially outward!
